It is said that smiling is the universal language of kindness. It is the most popular facial expression in the world, and some people even base their livelihoods on making other people smile. We are born with the ability to smile, and we use it as often as we can. But don't be fooled. Smiling is not some random, pointless expression we twist our faces into. The benefits of smiling are very real, and can make any day a little better.

Imagine your worst day. It might include stress, depression, and illness. Things are just headed south. It's just bad. Luckily, that's usually when people try to turn things around. How about trying to make sure that the only thing contagious about you is your smile?

Because smiling really is contagious. According to a Swedish study, people find it difficult to frown while looking at smiling faces, even if they are told to try. Instead of frowning, the subjects noticed how their faces felt more natural when smiling. But even if smiles can be contagious, they can actually cure other conditions. Mental and physical.

If you're down in the dumps, feeling sad and hopeless, smiling can be a step towards feeling better. Psychologists have found that even if you're in a bad mood, forcing a smile will actually lighten it for you. If the current state of reality is bringing you worries and sadness, just fake it till you make it.

Even a forced smile will still provide real, physical benefits. Smiling, fake or not, causes your body to release endorphins. It helps the body ease pains and stress. It let's you relax, which in turn boosts your immune system. In other words, a grin is a good way to deal with several things that might be going on inside you. It's a natural drug.

While all of that sounds pretty fine and dandy, the benefits of smiling are not limited to what goes inside a person. It will also affect how you are on the outside. Smiling makes us seem more attractive and successful. It will also make you look younger. When you smile you use many of your facial muscles. It's sort of a workout for your face. It will serve as a natural facelift.

It seems like people used to smile more before. We are always told about the "good old days". While those days probably weren't any better than the days we are having right now, there might be more things in our world today that make us frown. Hopefully, learning about the benefits of smiling, more and more people will realize why they really should turn that frown upside down.
